Today I want to share with you some ideas to earn some extra income! Making a little extra income can help you get ahead and save some extra money!
1. Sell things on Craigslist or Ebay
2. Babysit
3. Make things and sell them on Etsy or find an antique mall (or another store like it) to have a booth to sell items.
4. Have a garage/yard sale
5. Pick up a trade like sewing and offer to do inexpensive alterations.
6. Search with Swag Bucks. Although you don't get direct cash you can earn points to buy things like gift cards just by doing your normal searches.
7. Start a Blog. If you don't have a blog already it will probably take you awhile before you can start making money. But you can make money through selling advertisement space, Google Adsense, and Amazon Affiliates, and by doing reviews. I have not made a lot through Adsense just yet, but it takes time. Since I live in Illinois I cannot do Amazon Affiliates :(.
8. Sell fruits and vegetables from your garden.
9. Mow lawns
10. Raise chickens and sell eggs
11. If you have time get a part time job working a few hours a week. Like waitressing or cleaning houses.
12. Teach a class on things you know how to do (inspired by a reader Libby). I have a friend Jordan who teaches a once a week one on one sewing class for an hour to a few ladies. This helps her have a more "normal" income knowing she has these classes every week on top of selling up cycled dresses, wedding dresses, bags, and much much more.

Just in case you missed it...
One thing I've done is leased out a vehicle that I wasn't using. I had a suburban and a car at that time, a catering company leased it from me for 3 months for $2,000 and they provided the insurance they needed. I used the money to pay off the loan for the suburban and then sold it after they were done with it.
ReplyDeleteI've also done personal training and taught group fitness classes on the side as a way to earn a little extra money while in school. After we move and get settled in our new home I'm going to try to get back into doing that as my body lets me.
We need to have a garage sale here soon since we're not taking our furniture with us when we move.

ReplyDeleteTo the other Amy :-) I'm glad you posted this because I remember reading an article about how to earn extra income based on things you already do. In Essence magazine they used to have a side column called "Side Hustle of the Month" which spotlighted a person who created a side job for themselves.
I crochet, knit (some), and sew. I do have a very-empty Etsy store right now, but I just built a website and am working on items for my own store + Etsy. I do craft shows that have the smallest (or zero) entrance fees. I also am a teacher. And a photographer.
What I'm trying hard to learn is how to put a price on teaching someone to do something I already know how to do. Like tutoring a kid or teaching crochet lessons. If I had a standard fee that didn't sound outrageous, it would be much easier to market myself. I pass up many an opportunity to do both because I don't know what to say. Suggestions?
Those are great ways to earn a little extra income! I should have thought of the teaching thing to put on my list (I think I will update it :). I have a friend who teaches sewing lessons once a week to a few girls and charges $20 an hour class. This includes some fabric which she gets for free or really cheap at estate sales. Im sure you could get at least $20 (we live in a rural-ish town). So if you live in a city or a suburb that should be a breeze. You could make flyers and tell all your friends your offering and to tell people they know! Good luck!
DeleteThanks so much. I live in a small city, but the good thing is probably that there are no superstores to compete with. We don't have places like Joann's that teach those type of classes. The closest thing is Michael's but that's 30 minutes away. I definitely will look into it. :-)

I've thought about teaching knitting lessons before. I think it would be fun, but I had no idea what to charge either. Maybe this fall I will try to start something up. I've found many of these ideas are quite time consuming compared to the income you make. I have an Etsy store and a blog, and you're right, it takes a long time to start making any real money with either. Hopefully someday I will get there with my blog, but in the mean time it's something I really enjoy doing, so it's still worth it to me.

DeleteOh, I have to say swagbucks is my new best friend! Since May I have gotten about $60 worth of amazon gift cards...of course I have blown through all of that on books...but it still makes me happy to have free money :-)

ReplyDeleteThese are great ideas! I am doing a couple of things on your list. One other thing I did recently was sell some of my books to a local used book store - admittedly I didn't make very much (I think it was about $6), but it was enough to buy a couple of books that my kids wanted :)
